Music culture...

I’ve noticed that in terms of music, Berlin and Miami are very similar. A lot of the popular songs that are playing in the US are playing in Berlin as well. We’ve been to a few nightclubs around the city and the atmosphere is very similar as well, although the mixing of the music is a little bit different. They incorporate German music and American music into the playlist. Actually I’ve come to notice that American music is played more than any other king of music, not only at the clubs but also on the regular radio. Another interesting thing for me was walking into a bar where the only tourist or Americans where us, and all of the sudden they played “reggeton” music which is very popular music in Puerto Rico.

The difference between Germany and the US is that in the US we tend to not be as opened minded as in Germany in terms of music. Everybody who is not a minority from other countries in the US, listen to American music more than any other type. As I mentioned the German people accept American music very well although they also listen to their own very popular artists like Peter Fox and Seeed which are hip hop artists. Electronic music, rock music and pop music are very popular as well.

A very interesting thing I saw as I was walking around Potsdamer Platz was a group of four young men performing. They set a radio with hip hop music and started to perform choreography getting the attention of the people passing by. I thought it was interesting because I’ve seen this a couple of times around the city of Berlin. In Miami this is not very common to see around the streets. But the music and the type of dance they were using is very common in America.

  1. I also found it very suprising as well as extremely interesting that American music was played much more than German music in GERMANY! Since I was curious to know why, I asked some of my German friends from class. They all rambled on about how english music is highly accepted and actually prefered over German music. Not falling to make sure that I realize that German music is also listened to, they wanted to really express how much they love english music. While riding in the car with them, they were singing loudly to the same songs that I listen to back in Miami. It was actually nice because it gave us more of a connection and something to equally relate to.

As you stated in your second paragraph, America is not as open minded as other countries, I have to say that I agree and disagree. I agree with the fact that German's are well-accepting to American music and highly favor it, but, I assumed that, like many other countries, Germany thinks highly of the American culture and looks to it for many new ideas and additions into their own. Considering America to be one of the most diverese countries in the world, I find it interesting that they would be close-minded rather than having open arms to anything and everything.

Nevertheless, I completely agree with you and your interest in the fusion of the Hip Hop/Music culture from America, here in Berlin!!

  2. I thought this was interesting too. When I first got to Germany, I thought that I would be listening to German music and German language on the radio. I was definitely surprised to hear pop music on the radio. I still don't know if I like it or not, because its a sign that globalization is definitely taking place. Its the same debate that I always have. I can never decide on whether globalization is a good thing, because as a future advertiser it is and as a travel and culture lover, its not. As far as the music goes, I definitely think the US produces the most music worldwide and it will forever be the ultimate powerhouse for top 40 hits.
